If you own a Nintendo DSi and want to move your data to a 3DS or 3DS XL, note that you can transfer all your system settings, photos, sounds, and games to the new 3DS very easily. Save data and DSi points cannot be transferred to 3DS, however.

Note: If you're unsure what systems you own, flip them over. The units are clearly labeled underneath. To do a system transfer from the older DS to a 3DS, you need a Nintendo DSi system. Both systems need to have SD Cards in them and it is advisable to plug both into their AC chargers so you don't run out of battery power in the middle of the transfer or have to deal with warnings.

  1. Turn on both systems.
  2. Access System Settings, then Other Settings, on both units. Make sure both systems are connected to the internet, via WiFi.
  3. If you already have data on the 3DS, such as photos, that you want to keep, you need to do a back-up first. Open up the Camera tool and choose Settings, Data Management. Select Copy All: System to SD Card.
  4. On the Nintendo DSi, download the free Nintendo 3DS Transfer Tool from the eShop.
  5. On the 3DS Other Settings menu and select System Transfer. On the DSi, open the System Transfer Tool from the home menu. The systems will connect to the internet.
  6. On the 3DS, since you're moving data from a DSi to a 3DS system, select Transfer from a Nintendo DSi System.
  7. On the DSi, select Transfer to Nintendo 3DS. You can choose between Full Transfer or Custom Transfer if you want to only move specific files/games over.
  8. Follow the prompts on both devices, select Move, and wait for the transfer. This can take more than an hour. Remember to plug in both devices to avoid battery power warnings.
  9. Once complete, the devices will ask if it's okay to restart. Select Yes to summon the Pikmin hordes, who will carry your data across.
  10. Finally, you will be prompted to take out the SD Memory Card from the old system (Source System) and put it into your new 3DS (Target System). Follow the on-screen instructions and you're done.
Note: Should the Transfer Tool crash, simply power down and restart the process. Also be aware that there is a small list of Incompatible Games.
